On Sunday, December 18, Johnny Wilson, Danny Elliot and I left for Picton for a fall walleye fishing trip. We knew that the harbour was frozen - the temperature was -11 C.  We were hoping that someone had already broken a path through so we approached the ramp. Yahoo!! Someone had broken the path... but I had a problem: The cables in the remote control box had frozen.  I could not shift out of Neutral. After a while the lever finally moved to "Forward" and we went through the 1/2 inch ice like an icebreaker boat. We fished all day near the cement plant, catching four walleyes and a
pike. For a fall walleye fishing trip, that was my first good fight with a pike since 2000.  It was 7 pounds. Another fish, walleye, weighed 10.2 lbs. We called off at 3pm. The harbour was still frozen but we made it to the launch.  We used yellow planer boards and the lures: firetiger; Dr. Death; a reef runner greyghost; redhead shad; and a reef runner with chartruse belly and purple. Coffee and hot chocolate kept us WARM all day.

On Sunday, Nov. 21/2010 I had fishing fever so I checked the weather report for the Glenora area. It was 25 km south wind and cloudy which is ideal for walleye anglers.  I contacted Johnny, my regular boat partner, last minute, and we agreed to go the next day.  The next day we arrived at Picton and had to set up the stand up top on the boat as it had started to rain. We launched the boat and headed to Glenora. Oh boy there were a million fish in my fishfinder between the ferry line and Keith Shoal. Two hours later a red flag of my yellow board went down. PAH!!!  When reeling it, it felt like a small fish. When I was finally able to see it on top of the water I recognized it was a big trout. I yelled at Johnny to get the net. After netting I checked its weight. That damn fish kept moving when weighing it but it was between 8.8 lbs to 9.7 lbs so I decided it was 9 lbs. Unfortunately the batteries of my camera were dead. Johnny used my Blackberry to take a picture of my trophy. I released it as the trout season was closed. I recalled that my last time trout fishing was at Grand Lake of Algonquin Park in May 1978.  Yes, that is the largest trout I ever caught.  The walleyes have not been cooperating with the fishermen  lately. We will keep trying until the bay is frozen.

Jim’s Tiger Musky in the picture

In the morning of October 10th, 2010 Paul (my daughter’s fiancé) and I completed the Hickory hardwood installation on the kitchen floor at my cottage then we decided going out for fishing for a couple of afternoon hours.

I hauled my 19.5’ Legend boat with Mercury 90 hp 4 Stroke to the Bridgeview Marina launch ramp at Waubaushene.  We hope to catch the bass that’s where I caught them a few (large smallmouth bass) in the past on the Sturgeon Bay area.

No luck to get one for four hours and time go back to the cottage because we had a reservation for Thanksgiving dinner at 6pm due to my not completed kitchen renovation.

At 4:30pm the boat was strolling on the way to the boat launch. I throw a Rapala lure in the water. Suddenly I got something and turned the engine off. I reeled the fish carefully all the way to the boat without struggle.  Paul and I were so surprised what the fish looked like a big monster. I challenged it for about ten minutes because the line was not strong enough because of heavy weight and razor-sharp teeth.  It went underneath the hull twice and Paul tried grabbed it by the net off the water four times. Finally the fish landed on my boat and it was NOT monster but a beautiful fish called “Tiger Musky”.

Paul’s I-Phone snapped some pictures of fish and me before released it unharmed and healthy back to the water.

Too bad I didn’t bring the scale measurement but I know it was so huge and heavy.

 My LUCKY number was “10” = 10/10/10 means October 10, 2010.

By the way, we got on time for Thanksgiving dinner with my daughter Jeri and wife Joanne.

To say the least that is a memory I will never forget. And I feel blessed that Paul was there to share it with me and to know that that fish is still out there just getting bigger and waiting for some other lucky angler to experience a fish of a lifetime.

When catching the fish I thought it was a trout but it is a big walleye. I have not gotten a big walleye that before. I am thrilled about it. The weight and length are 9 lbs 13 oz and 37 inches long.
